Big Sandy Heritage Center's 2nd Anniversary In celebration of the second anniversary of its opening, the Big Sandy Heritage Center of Pikeville, KY, will be conducting a Civil War tour on Saturday October 15, 2005. Sites in Pike, Letcher and Floyd counties in Kentucky are on the itinerary, as well as a short jaunt into Wise County, VA.
Among the sites tentative selected for the tour are Wireman’s Shoals, the May House, Middle Creek National Battlefield, Ivy Mountain battle site in Floyd county. In PikeCounty, we will explore the Battle of Piketon, the Pikeville City Park, where James A. Garfield was commissioned a Brigadier General, and Elkhorn Creek, a bastion of Confederate marauders during the Civil War. We will also go the Pound Gap, on the Kentucky-Virginia border, the site of Garfield’s decisive surprise attack on its Confederate defenders.
The tour begins and ends at the Heritage Center and will last about nine hours. There will be several noted experts on the Civil War in Eastern Kentucky to accompany the tour as commentators.
